This summer commemorates the 65th anniversary of Disneyland, and one individual who spent much time exploring its origins serves as the guest on this episode. Dr. Todd James Pierce is a renowned author who wrote Three Years in Wonderland: The Disney Brothers, C.V. Wood, and the Making of the Great American Theme Park. Todd shares how Walt’s dream became a reality and exposes a figure in Disney history who has long been shadowed by the company itself: C.V. Wood. He is also the author of the well-received title The Life and Times of Ward Kimball and an English professor at California Polytechnic University. Todd hosts the Disney History Institute podcast, which since 2013 has featured rich, in-depth analyses into the history of The Walt Disney Company, as well as interviews and news.

From scoring some of the most beloved Epcot attractions, including Spaceship Earth and Soarin’ Around the World, to 90s-era Disney films like Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and The Rescuers Down Under, composer Bruce Broughton has been a musical fixture in our lives for many decades. He is a 10-time Emmy-Award-winning composer, also nominated for an Academy Award for 1985’s Silverado. On this episode of Notably Disney, Bruce joins Brett Nachman to talk about his work for Disney, including 1993’s Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and its 1996 sequel Lost in San Francisco. Bruce also shares details on developing the scores behind fondly-remembered theme park attractions, including The Making of Me, Ellen's Energy Adventure, and Golden Dreams.

Alton Fitzgerald White played Mufasa in The Lion King for a record 4,308 performances, whether it be on the Broadway stage, in Las Vegas, or on the first national tour for the acclaimed production. He's also the author of My Pride: Mastering Life's Daily Performance, an inspirational autobiography that chronicles his childhood, career and life lessons along the way. Beyond this, he recorded a mix of Disney on Broadway tunes with his signature spin for his Disney My Way album, as well as regularly performs for various concerts and endeavors with his Disney on Broadway family.
It is a thrill to welcome Alton to Notably Disney to discuss his book, album, and other projects. He joins Brett Nachman over a reflective conversation about his professional experiences in concert with principles and values that have guided his trajectory.
